I was numb.
Maybe I was broken.
There were no feelings inside of me whatsoever.
The caseworker handling my case kept making markings on my file, and I didnât have it in me to care. She tried talking to me again and again. Trying to get me to open up, but I didnât know what there was to say.
I was a statistic.
Nothing more than the repercussions of what happened when you drove under the influence.
The halfway house they brought me to was cold. It reeked of depression the moment you walked through those doors. This was a place where little boys and girls came to lose hope.
If the adults noticed it, they didnât mention it.
âThis will be your new room, Mateo,â the lady in charge of the home told me with a smile.
I looked at her and then at the room with two bunk beds. Two boys were in there, already looking silently at me.
I nodded at the lady and made my way inside.
This was going to be weird. I was an only child, and now I was forced to share a room with others. On the plus side, it wasnât like I was used to peace and quiet since my drunken father always made hella noise.
The boys didnât say anything to me as I walked to the opposite beds and placed my bag on the bottom bed. They looked to be about the same age as me. I could feel the eyes of the pale boy following me around.
âHey, newbie, what you in for?â the other boy with chocolate brown hair asked me.
I sat down on the bed and looked them dead in the eyes, and then I lied.
âNo hablo ingles.â
Maybe if they thought I didnât speak English, they would leave me alone. I didnât need anyone. We came into this world alone, and when we died, we left alone as well.
The pale boy snickered but didnât say anything else. After a little while, I sat on my bed and looked down at my feet like they were the most fascinating thing in the world. The two boys went on and on, talking and making plans.
âIâm telling you, Cal, no matter what, we gotta get ourselves into the university.â
I had to stop myself from snickering at their wild dream.
Street kids like us at the fancy school up north⦠there was no fucking way.
Before the other boy could reply, the door sprang open, causing me to jump. Guess old habits die hard. My body hadnât gotten the memo that there was no more need to tiptoe around my drunken father, since that asshole was dead and gone.
A blond boy stood at the entrance. He had a backpack on his shoulders and a smile on his face.
âIâm back, you morons,â he addressed the other two boys with glee.
âTiff checked you in for the weekend?â the boy with the chocolate brown hair asked him.
âYup, Mommy Dearest is going on a little trip, so to the hotel it is,â he said lightheartedly.
He then noticed me and smiled at me as he threw his backpack on the bunk bed on top of mine.
